The Benefits of Holistic Healing
Perhaps the ancients knew something that modern health practitioners have largely come to ignore. Although more and more practitioners are employing holistic therapies in combination with standard medical treatments, you’re still more likely to receive a prescription for a pharmaceutical than for an appointment with your local reflexologist.
The ancient ancestors of the Greeks, Chinese and Egyptians, among others, made regular use of holistic therapies to ease their ailments. Reflexology, aromatherapy and massage were employed more frequently than supplements for daily preventative health care and treatment of health issues. These natural health techniques have been in use for thousands of years, and are still being used today. When you consider the number of healthy individuals in these cultures, you have to admit that there must be something they know that we don’t.
Reflexology
This alternative medical technique is based on the premise that three main areas of the body – the feet, hands and ears – are very sensitive to specific pressure points. Placing pressure on these areas transfers energy to corresponding organs and systems throughout the body. Reflexology maps of the hands, feet and ears have been created to illustrate the locations of pressure points that affect specific systems.
Reflexology is not meant to cure disease or major health disorders. Its purpose is to promote stable health and to complement treatments for such conditions as asthma, anxiety, and allergies. Reflexology stimulates organ functions, immune systems and pain relief.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is based on the use of essential oils to stimulate brain function. Essential oils are the natural liquids derived from herbs, fruits, wood, flowers and spices. They are specifically chosen for their potent aromas and the way in which those aromas stimulate certain areas of the brain. You don’t need to be a scientist to know that just sniffing fresh ground coffee can make you feel more awake and alert. Other plants such as mint, lavender, and berries each have a different effect on mood and energy levels.
We all know that rubbing a piece of the aloe plant aids in the relief and accelerated healing of burns. Eucalyptus is commonly used in the treatment of asthma and respiratory ailments. Similarly, an entire range of essences are used individually or in combinations to promote and support the healing process.
Massage
Massage uses the healing power of touch to promote relaxation and a feeling of well-being. From the time we are born, we have experienced the warmth, reassurance and soothing properties of the touch of others, most notably, our mothers. Massage therapy takes this a step further by manipulating the soft tissues of the body to help increase blood flow, stimulate nerve endings and increase the production of endorphins. Endorphins are a neuro-chemical release that affects the functioning of organs as well as stimulating emotional centers of the brain urging relaxation and positive feelings.
With no chemicals being introduced to our bodies, and no invasive treatments that can cause other reactions or difficulties, natural holistic healing has only beneficial results that, at the very least, will leave you feeling relaxed and positive, with increased energy to face the day.
